In the Male Circumcision Support Project PING has adapted the Kgakololo SMS system to provide reminders, encouragement and information for men before the circumcision process as well as supportive messages and follow-up appointment reminders after the operation. Encouraging HIV negative men to get circumcised has become a high priority for the Ministry of Health as many studies have linked circumcision to a reduction in chance of HIV infection. Despite its benefits, circumcision is an intimidating event and generally requires abstinence from sexual contact for 6 weeks after the procedure in order to ensure healing.
